Getting Started in RC

Getting Started In RC Ref: GettingSTartedinRC
Thinking of getting into RC but not sure where to start? We all started somewhere in this game, some straight in the deep end racing, some just bashing and having fun on a weekend. The first thing of all to remember is HAVE FUN! Be it racing, bashing, or just building!

The Basics

Initially, after looking around for a while you should have an idea of what you are looking for, and if you are unsure then you need to ask yourself these four basic questions:

1. Do I like the look of on-road or off-road?

On road cars typically have higher top speeds and rates of acceleration than their off road counterparts and as such are well suited to running on the street, race track or even a deserted supermarket car park. The cars have low ground clearance and low centre of gravity. These cars generally need to be run on smooth surfaces as there is not enough suspension travel or ground clearance to handle the rougher terrain.

Off road cars, in direct contrast have much hogher ground clearance and are designed to take the punishment running, jumping and anything else you can do off road. These cars have parger shock absorbers, often two on a wheel to absorb the loads. These are not as stable when running on-road due to their higher centre of gravity, but can essentially be used anywhere!

2. Nitro, Petrol or Electric?

Nitro Methanol powered cars are typically very fast for their engine size and are the most popular type of fuel powered RC vehicles. These cars require tuning and breaking (running) in. A tank of fuel typically lasts 5-10 mins and the tank can be refuelled in a matter of seconds, leading to long run times and lost of enjoyment.

Petrol powered cars run on unleaded fuel, with an oil mixed into the fuel for lubrication. These cars are generally much larger due to the size of the powerplant, and are typically in the higher end of the cost scale for RC cars.

Electric cars are very well suited to the beginner in that the general sppeds are lower that the IC counterparts and generally easier to build and maintain. An added adavtage of electric is that there is no hot IC engine for little fingers to get burnt on!

3. What do I want to do with it?

Once you have decided if you like the look of on or off road, you then need to ask yourself if you are going to want to race it it or just have fun with it.

If you want to race or truck then you need to be looking at certain features - such as low centre of gravity, adjustable suspension and an engine that fits into one of the designated racing classes (for more info on the classes go to www.brca.org).

If the car is to be used more for fun then the sky is the limit. What ever you like the look of can be bought! For top speed go for a car with a two speed gearbox, if big jumps are your thing go for a truck with large suspension travel - but probabaly most importantly of all - go for a car that has good reliable spares back up. All cars stocked at Ben Racing are back up fully with spares, so you can be sure that when you do break your pride and joy you will be back on the road in no time!

4. The last, and probably the most important question - How much do I want to spend?

By now you will be getting an idea athat this hobby can be as expensive as you want it to be! Set yourself a budget and stick to it! You can have a smuch fun with a £200 cars as you can a £400 car but bear in mind, that cheap, under £100 cars on the internet are often just that - cheap! If in doubt about what is a good buy and what is not, give us a call on 01623 646320 as we will always give you honest open advice!

Follow these steps and you should end up with a car that meets you exact needs! If however you are still unsure and need a little unhurried friendly advice, then please don't hestitate to call us on 01623 646320! We will do our best to set you on the right track!

Good luck, and happy RCing!
